Asus suggests Nvidia artwork card add problems are down to low-level GPU yields

Asus has stated in a recent Investor Conference send for (via Tom's Ironware) that the reason it hasn't sold as many graphics cards in the prototypic three months of the year is down to a come by supply from Nvidia. Non solitary does this way the up-to-the-minute shortage of Nvidia's 30-series GPUs isn't about to get better any time soon, but the increased graphics card pricing we're seeing is likely to continue.

Nvidia itself has entirely talked about component shortages, so Asus saying, "Our guess is that the gap might have been caused past let down yields upstream [potentially indicating Nvidia's own production at Samsung]", is surprising. The yield Hera refers to the phone number of practical GPUs per wafer. If the Asus call is unfeigned, it suggests that all is non well with Nvidia's decision to employment Samsung's 8N manufacturing for its Ampere GPUs.

That has overnight been suggested aside otherwise outlets, merely there has yet been no more proof to congest any of this conjecture. And we likely won't hear anything around it unless it materially affects Nvidia's revenue and it has to fess equal to investors, as chip yields are forever enviously restrained by companies.

Asus likewise suggested that Nvidia had ordered fewer wafers for the world-class quarter of the year, which would be the norm usually, as demand for graphics cards tends to slump after the Holiday period. Such orders are planned a laden quarter advance, and Nvidia would have had no theme how popular Ampere would be OR the impact Covid-19 would accept on ask.

There's also the problem of cryptocurrency mining, putt even more than pressure on the card game that are being made, although Asus doesn't know how some of its card game end upward mining. Nvidia has tried to deter miners from buying its cards, and with the spill of the RTX 3060, it introduced measures to stop the card game mining Ethereum, although a developer driver did slip out which undermined its efforts here somewhat.

There are reports that Nvidia has already reached bent on TSMC for extra production of International ampere chips, although given the call for on TSMC's have capacity, that's not inevitably going to bear present fruit. Intel's decision to enter the declaration metalworks business sure looks wish a wise move right now.

Alan has been writing about PC technical school since before 3D graphics cards existed, and still vividly recalls having to fight with MS-DOS merely to get games to freight. He fondly remembers the killer combo of a Matrox Millenium and 3dfx Juju, and seeing Lara Croft in 3D for the first clip. He's very thankful hardware has advanced as much arsenic it has though, and is specially happy when putting the current M.2 NVMe SSDs, AMD processors, and laptops through their paces. He has a lasting Supernatural: The Gathering compulsion but limits this to MTG Arena these days.
